audi alarm madness

Hi all,

1996 Audi A4 1.9TDi, 115k, factory fit alarm (afaik). I had been having problems starting the car, especially on cold mornings, and had been advised that the battery was not working properly, so I changed it on sunday there and dropped in a new one (or rather, halfords did). Car now starts happily but, as of Monday night, the alarm has gone a bit mental. It first went off for no reason on monday night (24+ hrs after new battery), but just the once. Then at 6am today (tuesday) it decided to keep going off, so I was forced to open it and leave it unlocked. I went to work and tried it again, but the alarm went off five minutes later so I left it unlocked all day. When I got it home, I checked the handbook and pulled fuse 14 for 'interior lights, reading lights, anti-theft alarm, vanity mirror'. The listed interior lights now don't come on, but the bloody alarm does! I left it a couple of hours and off it went again, except now the hazards don't flash with the horn.

I've left it unlocked again for now, but wtf? Have had the car six months and no electrical funnies other than two speakers not working and the dodgy battery. It sounds to me like some dodgy wiring going on by somebody, but what do you wise gents think/advise?

TIA

Vag-Com is your friend, or the hazard warning light switch isn't.

I know nothing of the system, but since they've had the bonnet up to replace the car battery, I'd be thinking of e.g. the bonnet switch (if the Audi has one) - a pin switch that detects if the bonnet is opened, and hooked up to the alarm.

Check that the bonnet is properly secured down, and maybe examine that any pin switch is actuating properly, and hasn't been knocked during the battery installation.

Normally, such a pin switch will be fairly evident, often shrouded in a convoluted rubber sheath to protect the workings from the crap under the bonnet

Vag-Com is indeed my friend. Looks like the central locking has been shorting out to ground and awful lot. Thanks for the tip.
