Cavalier V6 Tyre Pressures

Hi,



I got the front tyres changed on my V6 Cavalier at the weekend, and had the usual 'discussion' with the fitters about how many psi they should be inflated to. The car handbook says 39 front and 36 rear, but after looking through various books and charts the fitter came up with 33 front and 30 rear. (I don't think the V6 was explicitly listed though).



Does anyone know which is right???

The figures listed are only a guide, or starting point, you should adjust the pressures slightly up or down, to achieve your desired comfort / handling balance depending on loads carried.

The 39 front and 36 rear would seem to be that for a fully laden car being driven at high speed- I would start by using the 33 / 30 combination and see how it feels etc.

If you have a figure from the handbook use that and ignore the tyre fitter.

The handbook will list an engine/tyre combination and should give normal and loaded/high speed pressures.

If your combination is not listed in the handbook what is the nearest?

I agree. A figure in black and white in a reliable book must always be taken in preference to something someone says. Even if they claim to have looked something up they may have looked it up wrongly.

Check that you have read the figure for an unloaded car as 39/36 does seem a bit high but, if that's what it says, that's what it is.

I've just come across this site (the V6 isn't listed here too) which some may find useful for tyre pressures.

That sounds more like the fully-loaded recommendation. I only had a 1.8, but the weight difference will be small and they all ran on fairly wide rubber. I ran about 30-32 all round in normal driving.

According to Vx TIS CD -

Cavalier C25XE Up to 3 persons Full Load

195/60R-15 87V Front Rear Front Rear Alloy Rims 2.3 2.1 2.4 2.6 Steel Rims 2.7 2.5 2.8 3.0

Pressures are in bar. Multiply by 14.7 to get PSI.

Hmmm...I'll have to look at the book again (if I can find it). Either it's listing pressures for steel wheels or full load...
