Does changing the Air filter help fuel ecconomy?

Hi All,

My wife was reporting poor fuel ecconomy on our recent ourchase (2003 Meriv a). First thing I did was to change the slightly grotty looking air filter . She has reported that fuel ecconomy is much improved (number of ££ £/Week for the same distance). But.....

I can't think why it should. on an olde fashioned carburetter setup, I cou ld see that if the airflow was being strangled relative to the fuel going t hrough the jet(s) it would affect the mixture and thus the fuel ecconomy. b ut on a "modern" engine, even if the filter is a bit clogged, as long as ai r is getting through (and being measured by the MAF) then the ECU(s) will w ork out the right ammount of petrol to squirt in for the ammount of air (or vice versa) or am I missing something? Just to assure those herepresent, it has now had a full serviceand the knicker elastic has been changed.

TIA

Chris

If the air filter was *very* dirty, maximum power output would be reduced. On a low-powered vehicle it would be more noticeable. It would then be necessary to use lower gears at times, especially in a hilly area. The effect on consumption is unlikely to be detectable on a casual basis however.

Reduced pumping losses. It takes power to draw air into the engine.
