Failed MOT on emissions, quite badly

Z22SE engine as fitted to various vauxhallsfailed emissions quite badlyfast idle testCO Max Limit - 0.300 - actual 9.298HC 200 - actual 1060Lambda min 0.970 max 1.030 - actual 0.801second fast idle testCO 0.300 actual 9.946HC 200 actual 1187Lambda min 0.970 max 1.030 - actual 0.761Natural Idle TestCO max 0.500 actual 5.869car has visible emissions, you can see soot when its running,i changed the precat lambda this morning but still no luck,cat is quite new, any suggestions on what it could be ?cheersmark

I only suggest it because the symptoms (well, HC and CO) are very similar to what I had on the DS with what turned out to be a dodgy plug. It ran fine under load, but on idle one cylinder was just not quite doing what it should.

Of course that's an ancient engine with no sophistication - yours has lots more exciting ways to go wrong!

How "slightly" has it been tweaked? If the new cams are of a significantly different profile then your ECU will have no chance of fuelling the engine correctly and that would explain the crappy idle and high emissions.
