Could be worth checking the immobiliser.

My daughter (4yo) managed to take apart our key and "lost" the id chip (very small - 4mm x 2mm x 3mm rectangle) that fits into the key itself. The symptoms were the same - fired then cuts out.

I spent a painful few hours checking things like the brake light switch (which IIRC *can* be another cause of similar symptoms) and relays, etc.

Eventually I gave up and contacted the main dealer (Purbeck Ford - very helpful!) and they put me straight. Luckily, we found the chip and just popped it back in the key and bingo!!

Sounds like immobilizer. Did you try spare key.

Ford PATS systems tend to either let the car start, or won't. AFAIK the PATS implmentation on this won't even allow engine to crank.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I'm sure my old Focus did something similar.

No, the Focus doesnt crank at all if its immobilized.

It did on our 52 (late 02-early 03) reg Gal TDi auto. I don't know if the implementation might be different between the VW diesel engine and the Ford 2l and 2.8l engines (was the 2.3 used in the Gal as well?).

It depends on the management system, I suppose. The Ford EEC IV and EEC V systems with integrated PATS (which are used to power Zetec's), AFAIK, won't allow the engine to crank.

I'm not 100% sure on all the engines available on this, but I'm pretty sure the 2.8 was the VR6 motor from VW.

Thats cos its a VAG engine with VAG ECU- thus immobilizer implementation differs to the Ford plan of action.
