Hi.



Hopefully someone can tell me what the problem is so I can fix it.


  1. When car is stationary and idling over, If I turn the steering wheel left or right, I can hear a grinding/groaning noise while turning the steering wheel. As soon as I stop turning the steering wheel the noise stops.


  1. It is worse when at full right or full left lock as the grinding/groaning noise becomes constant at full lock even though the steering wheel is no longer moving at the extremities of the steering range.

  2. When car is stationary and revved above say 1k RPM, there is no problem when i turn the steering wheel to full lock either side. as in no noise.


  1. When the car is moving, there is no problem with the steering at all noise wise.

  2. It has only started since the snow fell, so am wondering if that might be related or simply pure coincidence?

Check the level of the power steering fluid. It'll be low, and you're hearing the pump cavitating - basically, pumping air-and-fluid and making foam.

Thats a good response. I am informed that I cannot use any PAS fluid, it has to be a VW specific green fluid...... can you confirm?

and would that not indicate a power steering fluid leak somewhere too?
