Came across council gritters, gritting the roads today.
I thought it was very strange & I was thinking maybe they had misread the forecast of the hottest day of the year
Anyway typed it into Google News & it seem the councils are trying to save their road budget by gritting the roads to create a no-stick layer between the road & the cars tyres

Maybe it reduces the chance of tyres pulling chunks of melted tar out of the surface...
And in the process scrubbing away your tyres forcing their early retirement?!
Imagine sliding your hand across a sticky surface. Now cover it in flour and do it again.
Which one has more friction?
I'd think for these hot conditions the grit will reduce tyre wear not increase it.
I suspect it won't make much difference to the vast majority of people. If the grit is embedded into the soft tarmac it may make for a less unstable surface, maybe..?
According to a local radio story the councils is using a "vehicle that looks like a gritter" to spread sand on melted road surfaces.
