Is changing clutch on mondeo really a big job/£500?

In Parkers price guide it says about 2nd hand mondeos, changing clutch can be a £500 quid job. Is it really a big job, or have they found a short cut? I think somebody said the engine has to come out? I suppose the 500 they are quoting is a main dealer price.

£500 will be main dealer prices. It is an awkward job but an independent garage will be able to do it cheaper. Its important that the sub frame gets aligned on refit which requires special pins but these can be bought for £20 so many independents should have a set.

Wherabouts are you. Ellesmere Port Clutch Centre charge £100 to £250. Nephew's Corsa was £110. My hdi Xantia was £220 and it's a big heavy lump. Left it at 9am and picked it up at 1pm. DaveK.

Garages quote £600 -£800 round here (Kent) for a Mondeo clutch.

Berkshire Fiesta Centre - in Bracknell -has a garage adjacent which charged labour only at £250.00

Bear in mind that I supplied the clutch, friction plate, release bearing and brake fluid for this job. The price quoted was purely for their effort, and a fee to 'cover their arses' should they c*ck-up for any reason.

No wonder there are so many in the breakers round here! :( I've been quoted £150 labour if I supply the parts, but thats from the sort of "back street" place that most people would probably avoid out of prejudice. Even though he's really good ;)
