It's definately pinking!

Sounds very low. Don't forget, Peter's a young new driver, so no NCB and a high loading for still being in nappies.

Probably at least £6-700 (even on a chinkycento) especially as the odds are that Mumsy-wumsy won't let him insure TPFT. Add on the fully loaded AA cover, too.

The message from petermcmillan snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com (Peter) contains these words:

No, Peter, what /you're/ saying is embarrasing. You've picked up loads of words and phrases the meanings of which you aren't clear on, and you're spraying 'em round all over the place trying to sound important.

Cold oil is thicker than warm oil, so it will make gear changes a little firmer but if it's so bad that you struggle to get it into gear then perhaps it has the wrong grade of oil in the gearbox? This can also happen if the clutch isn't fully release when you change gear, though that would happen even when warm. Also, if you've got the wrong grade of oil in the engine then that can affect the running when cold, as well as taking longer thna normal to pressurise the tappets.

As for the fan belt, it will squeal if it's not tight enough, or just plain worn out.

Sounds like either your ignition is too advanced, the mixture is too weak, or the engine is running too hot. You'll need to start testing things such as the coolant temperature sensor and knock sensor (if fitted) - all of which I'd entrust to a mechanic or test by substitution.

Of course, your driving style could be to blame!? :-P

Shouldn't pink at all, even on a hot day and towing a caravan at snail's pace. Your car sounds like it has a problem.

Don't swap unless you have to - even a year old car can have (or develop) faults which you'll still have to shell out for, but you've less chance of fixing a new car without dedicated test kit. If you must change, buy a 10yr old diesel for a few hundred quid and run it into the ground.

Darren

Can you get old car smell too? That strange acuumulation of bits of dry leaves that have blown in through the vents, and other s**te?

The message from "Doki" contains these words:

My car doesn't smell of that - it's usually old bananana skins and other stuff the kids have left lurking.

Doki ( snipped-for-privacy@spamtroNspidar.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

It costs less than a can of "new car smell", and comes with a free old car.

That is really really worrying...

Peter - While I don't find it beyond the realms of possibility, it's probably a bit like saying that *this* politician is more truthful and honest than *that* one.

It strikes me that *NONE* of you should be allowed anywhere near the roads.

Isn't it just?

Peter (petermcmillan snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

If you've been near it, then - yes - it almost certainly does.

Then it wasn't "labouring"

Ohmigawd, you actually got the bloody engine warm! Maybe...

One day, you'll realise just how much bollocks you're typing.

No.

Does your clutch pedal have a rubber cover on it? Like it should?

REALLY? is that all over the country or just in London

I got a Private Hire Thingy for about 6 miles (17" monitors are heavier than you think when you have to carry them for any distance) and it cost me no more than £5!

Tom

The words "black cab" and the link to TFL means it's London.

Well, it's when I pull away. As I'm trying to pull away smoothly the clutch ficks to the top when there wasn't enough speed or gas.

It must really upset Mr Status when he cannot drive his symbol as fast as the police Focus that has just gone past him.

ROFL! I do about 6-7 miles just going to uni. That's about 11-12 miles/day! 6/weeks is a slight exageration lol!

Sorry, forgot to mention in the last post, I have had it looked at by a mechanic. The first one said it's misfiring, but they don't have the equipment to diagnose it. The 2nd one charged me £63.10 and said that there was nothing wrong with it. They blames the pinking on the cat heat shield, and claimed that it wasn't pinking. I can't believe that though because when I put performance ignition leads on the pinking almost went completely!

OK, what's the word for when the engine's about to stall then?

My fan comes on regularly, my journeys aren't that short!

Am I? Remember, my car has an 899cc engine, even when idling the revs drop loads when the fan comes on!

Oh

It does.

I paid a mecahanic £62.10 (I think) and he said there was nothing wrong :-(

Oh yeah, you do have faith in me being able to drive without crashing then ;-)

I'm working on my 2nd year of no claims at the moment!

Done that a while ago (the gearbox oil that is)!

Where can I find a competant mechanic? Last time I had 2 mechanics driving it, and one was the boss or something.
