It's definately pinking!

I make it 3k rpm. It does have *4* cylinders right?

;o)

scott ( snipped-for-privacy@spam.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

400 explosions x 60 seconds = 24,000 per minute.

Divided by 4 for for the number of cylinders = 6,000 explosions per cylinder per minute. I suspect you've got this far, though...

Now - where are you getting this revolutionary engine technology that sparks twice per revolution from, because most spark once per second revolution?

That's 12,000 rpm.

Alfa Romeo. Twin Spark.

That'd be once per revolution though, wouldn't it (on average)?

AstraVanMan ( snipped-for-privacy@WithThanks.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

There's still only one explosion every two revolutions...

Earlier ones fired both plugs simultaneously, later ones had a slight delay to reshape the burn, but Alfa still didn't manage to reinvent the Otto cycle to fill each combustion chamber with fresh mixture four times as often...

scott ( snipped-for-privacy@spam.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

It's Italian electrics. Once every three on average, probably...

Day to day, it plods arround like a nice snesible 2 litre sporty lookign coupe. Nail it, and watch the horizon suddenly get close a lot faster. Addictive in short burst, and they don't have acceleration cameras yet.

Allowing for a normalish 5.5-6k redline, then yes. It might be noisy, but yes.

Try to keep revs at or below 3k until it is warmed up (needle has moved off the low temp mark, or into the normal running section of the temp guage, and then shifting at about 4k is fine. Room for over-rev, and it will actually blow any crap out of your engine, and put a lot less strain on it than labouring.

In my 1100cc Uno, I used to use first for 30mph. In fact, in a lot of cars I've gone 1st to 4th. And most of tehm have been underpowered little boxes like yours. I hardly ever hit 3rd before 30, often barely, if at all, slotting into 3rd before reaching straight for 4th.

And FFS, you've got near 6,000rpm for a reason! If the makers didn't want the engine to ever get over 4k, that's where they'd have set the limit.

Yes you can! 1st gear is the highest ratio! The next lowest is 2nd, then 3rd and finally 4th. I think you are thinking of the gearing being the other way around, with 1st as the lowest and 4th (known as "top") as the highest, whereas in fact it's completely the other way around. 1st, the highest ratio, alows the engine to turn at a (relatively) higher RPM than the roadwheels, so that the mass of the vehicle can be "launched" from stationary. As speed builds up (and the "launch" load decreases as speed increases, you traverse through 2nd, 3rd and finally 4th) to attain your "top" cruising gear.

If you think that the vehicle is labouring in 1st gear - try "launching" it in 4th! That'll showya labouring!

I haven't got a temp guage :-(. The closest I've got is a temperature warning light, although that fortunately doesn't come on :-)

Yes, but what about when they're cold? I think 30mph in 1st is right on the limiter in my car. Acording to my book the top speed is 26mph, but I think I've hit 30mph, but I changed up because the car was shaking so much. The whole gear stick was even shaking from side to side lol.

Is it once per rev? Somebody told me that they have more power due to the extra spark plug. Do the plugs take it in turns and do they really give the engine more power? To be honest, I think it just adds extra cost.

Peter (petermcmillan snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

No, Peter, they aren't a two-stroke.

Do you actually know how a four-stroke works? In-Squeeze-Bang-Out?

The combustion chamber can be shaped slightly better and the flame front can be more optimally shaped, too.

No, they don't take it in turns. They both fire either together or slightly offset on the same power stroke.

And you also think your Sei is pinking, and that your mummy knows her arse from her elbow.

Turbo jet? they can be designed for petrol but burn almost any liquid fuel?

That sounds more like a worn engine or geabox mount. but that would show up on the MOT normally.

Why did I write that? I do know how it works, but I think I used the wrong words in my post.

When I sent the post I realised that I was getting mixed up with sparks and explosions.

Peter (petermcmillan snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Have you considered having that as your .sig?

wtf? You *must* have.

Are you sure it's a _car_ you're 'driving'?
