Lidl Battery Jump Starter From Monday

Indeed, two years ago, I paid £53 for a Varta Lifetime. IIRC the battery is guaranteed for the lifetime of the car...although I often wonder how long a lifetime guarantee battery can realistically can be expected to last?

My cousin's daughter works at a knicker factory as a diesel fitter.

As the knickers come off the production line, she holds each pair up and says "Dies'll fit 'er"!

your cousin once removed

(*chuckles* only acu-dab readers will get why -that's- relavent...)

Surely just "dees'll fit"... the person doing a "dees'll fit" job would be a "dees'll fit"-er.

It also makes more sense in the context of the joke.

My BMW badged battery lasted 3 years near enough to the day after the warranty ran out. ;-)

I reckon on three years for any battery. If someone knows of a better one, I'd buy it for the SD1, which will on history need a new one shortly.

Until the car doesn't start from the battery anymore, I imagine.

markets...without

Assuming that you will have to buy a new battery some time fairly soon, why not do it now and have the benefit yourself, rather than someone you eventually sell the car to - or a breaker's yard.

Can I just buy it, sit it in a cupboard until I need it? When I need it, I just yank the old one out and plonk the new on in and reconnect it, and it should work?

Will leaving the new battery in the cold (ie. in the boot?) be a bad thing?

That's who make BMW batteries. With the built in time switch.

Only if it falls over & wrecks the boot. & if it's going to outlast your ownership you might as well fit it

I've just sold my Niva after after owning it for just over three years. It still had the Russian branded battery that was in it when I got it and it definfitely wasn't new then. I suspect that it was the original battery which makes it about 6 1/2 years old now. That's pretty good.

Leaving a car battery unused long term is a bad idea - they will slowly discharge and be damaged if they sit too long in this state. If it's disconnected from any loads, I'm not sure how long this would take though, my motorbike battery has survived 5 years so far with frequent idle periods of 2 or 3 months, so this length of time should be OK for an otherwise healthy battery.

You can, but it's not generally recommended.

Don't keep it in the boot, as it may leak acid if it falls over

If it will last you out you might as well fit it and get the benefit. Do you really fancy fitting the new battery on a freezing cold, wet morning (that's when the old battery will go) - probably when you are in a hurry and dressed in your best rags!
