Megane ignition key code

Hi I have a 98 Renault Megane 1.4. I renewed one of the ignition key batteries and it now won't operate the immobiliser. I took it to the Renault dealer for them to check it and they checked the key was transmitting. They told me it was but the key could still be faulty and it would be £25 to enter another code into the key. If this didn't work then I would need a new key at £75 +VAT and another £25 to enter the code into a new key. It seems like a load of messing about and possibly an expensive time too considering its only lost it's memory. Does anyone know of a way round this as it seems crazy that I should have to go to all this trouble every time a battery needs renewing.

TIA Phil

Is it the Megane with the flashing red light at the top of the instrument panel. If so, try open doors with key, (not remote). Turn on ignition, light flashing, turn off ign, close doors and lock with remote, open with remote and turn on ign. This has reset them for me before. If not I'd say you'll probably have to stump up for a re-code.
