Anyone got any personal experience with late 1990's Mexican Bugs, the 1600cc. Are they kosher as far as getting registered here, are parts available, and does anyone have any info on insurance companies that might cover them.

A mate had a J-reg (IIRC) cat'n'carb MexiBeetle for a while. No real issues with it at all.
No fun. Non of those "if I press the accelerator hard enough will I see daylight through the bulkhead" or "will the door stay on the car or come off in my hand?" moments.
Half the fun of a beetle is wondering if you'll end up being sat on the road when you next get in 'cos the floor is so rotten.
They were being sold new in Edinburgh at least as late as 1998 so must be fairly kosher...
