Mini PAS problem

2003 MINI Cooper 1.6 manual, 51k miles.

On a motorway run a couple weeks ago I lost PAS - the wheel became very heavy but the car was still steerable. Pulled off at the next exit and checked under the bonnet. Plenty of fluid in the reservoir and nothing else looked amiss so I resigned myself to having to get it checked out at a garage. But on restarting, all was well and has been since.

It did it again tonight, and only needed a switch off and restart while stopped at traffic lights to bring the PAS back.

It might be my imagination, but on both occasions I think I noticed a 'hot' smell in the engine compartment, but the car had been run fairly hard both times and it might just have been that.

Any ideas please?

Seems they have electric, rather than hydraulic, assist.

Have a look here:

Looks like it's a common failure.

I suspect the servo / motor bit is overheating, sending a signal to the ECU to cut the power, but this gets re-set when you turn the car off.

Cheers for the link. It does say 2004 on, but the symptoms described are the same.

I also forgot to mention that no warning light comes on when this happens.

Ta.

Checked out Honest John:

"Reports of PAS problems. The electric motor which runs the pump packs up and sometimes takes the wiring loom with it (through overheating). BMW dealers quote £750 to repair, but BMW will sometimes approve 'goodwill' of half the cost of parts and labour."

and Watchdog:

Think I'll get my (independent) garage to take a look. Car's just passed its MOT, but I know the exhaust backbox is close to finished and it'll soon need a couple new tyres. Might be time to cut my losses and part-ex it. Fancied a BMW for some time now.

My 2005 Mini S steering made a lot of noise - high pitched whine. Didn't strike me as an especially durable car, judging by forums and experience. I sold it to a dealer when it went in for a service, and a list of works required adding up to £2k (mainly flywheel). I didn't even know anything was wrong.

PXd for a 2008 S. Enjoy it a lot, and seems a /bit/ better screwed together, although it's spent a week in the garage for top of engine work over the past year. Covered under warranty, luckily.

was that the mkI or II? Mine's the mkI and my mom has the II. They're totally different cars; hers is nowhere near as fun to drive.

It's built in Oxford, I think? Maybe you got a Friday afternoon one?

eep.

TO date, mine has needed tyres, battery, wiper blades, one rear wheel bearing (probably 'cos I go round corners on two wheels).

I gave it a long fast motorway run last night and today (dry weather) and the PAS problem hasn't recurred. Both times it happened previously it was very wet and now I'm wondering if some water found its way in somewhere.

Today the driver's seat height adjustment gave up the ghost - it'll only go up, not down. Had a look at the mech which is riveted to the seat frame and non-replaceable. Sigh. Couldn't get the Torx T30 bolts holding the seat out, have ordered one from ebay with a 3/8" drive that goes on a wrench. Also looking around for a used seat in case I can't fix the mech. Tried 5 of the local scrappies, none had Minis in.

Not good :( What went wrong with it?

Mk.1. The my newer mk.2 is a little softer, but it suits my driving and Sheffield's roads :-). I think the turbo works better than the supercharger on this engine - really flexible with a bucket of power after 1500rpm.

Yes, I think Oxford. And yes, end of a long shift I suspect.

:-)

I've driven just about all types now except diesel, from both series - mainly by virtue of courtesy cars, and my mum had a mk.1 one. The mk.2 non-S I find too slow and soft - I just didn't feel like driving it hard. Others a right hoot. Couldn't go back to a non-S though.

Maybe - have a look at the Mini2 forum - might be something in the archive, and they started a petition for the PS.

Mmm. Shouldn't happen IMO. BMW seem to have designed in some quite poor aspects, and are very slow to put things right in production.

Lot of faffing about - two lots of chain/tensioner, then the rocker cover buckled (or something - never found out). Also, an oil pipe to the turbo. That was just out of warranty and the perishers wouldn't cough up

- £500.

I had thought about changing it, but I can't think of anything that would give me the combination of economy, practicality, performance, handling and (for me at least) comfort.
