Mondeo with malfunctioning aircon

Jul 02, 2006 3 Replies

My Mondeo ST24 is 'v' reg, about 65,000 miles, regularly serviced. Aircon symptons were : It would start by working fine when I switched the engine on and the air con on. Cold air quite quickly, light on as expected. Within a few minutes it would start producing a damp musty smell, then the air would turn warm, and the air con would no lnoger cool the air. Next day the same again.

I have taken it to a ford garage, they recharged it and they aso put in some dye to check for leaks and found nothing wrong. WHen i took it away from them they said it was now working and it seemed to be working when I first had it, but as said, it starts to fail after anywhere between 5 and about 20 minutes.

Any thoughts as to what could be going wrong with this? I would like to get some ideas before shelling out hundreds at the local ford.

thanks

dave

If you could tell us the behaviour of the compressor clutch it would be a start.

Does the Mondy compressor have a superheat cut out switch? If so, this is the most likely.

Tim..

Thanks for responding Tim, but I don't know about the compressor clutch. How would I find that out? I'll check out the compressor supr heat cut out.

The cut out switch is on the back of the compressor, if fitted. You can easily meter (or use a test light) it to see if the switch is opening and cutting power to the clutch.

Its easy enough to see if the lack of cold air co-incides with the compressor stopping..

tim.
