Oil and filter change

Dose the filter have a big set of flats on the end?

The one on our Lupo does, and that handily fits the huuuuge socket I bought for getting the (non-cannister) filter off my A3. It means you can get a ratchet on it. Some decent filters (Mann/Bosch) have a handy hex end you can get a spanner on.

Halfrauds flog them.

I remember cursing the spanish bastard that factory-fitted the filter on my ibiza- that look a lot of swearing to shift.

The oil that is in the sump, I presume it wont overflow the filter connection should I manage to get it off - apart from what is in the filter of course?

Will it be ok to leave it as it is until the weekend when I have more time?

TIA

I have a feeling the filter is so tight that even using that I'll just twist the case. I think destroying it may be the only option to get it off. :(

Depends on the layout, but if you don't drain it first you may end up with most of the contents of the sump coming out of the filter hole. Probably not what you wanted.

As I mentioned elsewhere in the thread, try a hammer or hammer/chisel against the thread-end of the filter (not the soft outside). Might be enough of a shock to dislodge it. With luck you won't puncture the filter, so even if it doesn't get it off you're no worse off. Be careful with tools on the soft metal to avoid punctures (a strap is better than a chain, as the pressure should be spread more widely).

But as it's still driveable you'll have to weigh up the risk that you manage to puncture it and have to call someone out. You could always try it just across the road from Kwik Fit :)

The oil will not come out of the sump with the filter off. However, I would do another oil change in the near future since the quantity of oil and muck that stayed in the old filter will degrade the new stuff you put in. So aim to change it again within 6 months or so.

I did have a quick go at that - but the filter is in such an difficult position on this car (Peugeot 106) that I may need to jack the car up to get a good swing at it.

At least I can use the oil for a few more months... I hate to waste stuff.

In your situation I would have put the old oil back in till I could get the filter off.

Another good reason for not tipping it straight down the drain ;-)

Too late - the new is already in.

In retrospect, I wish I'd have waited, and if I didn't need the car for work tomorrow I probably would have.

And this is why you go to National Tyres and bung them =A310 or =A320 or=20 whatever they're charging.

I bet that next time you get your local fast fit place to do it.

Next time, he won't be removing a filter that was overtightened by some fast-fit chimp...

Yep... you'd be right. :)

I have the same approach to recycling household waste. Almost everything goes to landfill, in thousands of years time archeologists will then know exactly what a beer can, a wine bottle, a gin bottle or a plastic slimline tonic bottle looks like.

Same thought here. I let mine drain for an hour while I do other things. Then take care that new oil isn't overfilled over the max line. Garages always overfill IME, presumably so they can charge for the extra oil... And I know that it's fully synt that goes in, and not some other stuff.

Got the filter off this afternoon. I had a bit more time and patience.

I'll leave the old oil in for six months then change it again.

Cheers all.
