There's a contact on the drivers door lock which can cause this. If they're anything like my M reg 218, a cast spigot breaks off the gear mechanism, so the motors turn without moving anything. Replacement motor is the only answer.

On mine the passenger doors work with the fob, but only then if the drivers door contact is intact - without it none will work.

Try unlocking the car then pressing the lock button four times on the fob.

If that doesn't work, try removing the lead from the alarm unit (under carpet in boot on right side) and reattaching then doing the keyfob thing again.

If that then doesn't work, its "get trousered by the Rover Dealer" time again...about £75.
