Peugeot 205 - Clutch/Gearbox

I've a Peugeot 205 (1.4, 1988, 93K) and recently I've had problems selecting the gears. Its now so bad that the car is not driveable. If I do manage to bang it into gear, the drive is very rough and is accompanied by a loud whining noise.

I'm pretty sure either the clutch or gearbox (or both) are about to expire. The car's only worth about £300 (if working), so does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to repair - or should I just delivery it to the scrappy?

THe noise you describe is indicative of something fairly major being wrong within the gearbox. Given the age of the car and the likely cost/hassle of repair [even using a 50-quid "scrapyard" gearbox which you may dosciver, on fitment, is also shagged] I'd suggest you put it out of its misery.

Depending how much mot its got - somebody might want it if its only the=20 gearbox that needs changed .

Sell your mot failure - or just sell/exchange some parts off it before scrapping it=20

Spares Or Repair

I had the gearbox rebuilt & worn parts replaced by a gearbox specialist for around £35 after a bit of haggling and me agreeing to remove the gearbox from the car and refixing it to the car when they had finished. Also replaced a clutch at a later date on my sons 205

Taking it to a scrapyard with probably get you enough money for a taxi home asking them to collect it will probably cost you.

If it's going to the scrapyard and your in the south yorks or north east derbyshire area let me know I may be interested if the rest of the car is in good condition.

Crikey. Most specialists won't get their hands dirty for that.
