Power Steering Question

Hi,

If I turn full lock right or left the steering judders. Any ideas what this might be?

Thanks

Don't apply full lock - seriously - it can cause damage. The judder will be the relief valve.

On full lock you are trying to move the immoveable.

If it is juddering whilst turning from lock to lock- most likely air in the system- level too low, or a slipping drive belt.

However, I wouldn't like to run it in that condition for long...for a start all that energy's got to be going somewhere...and the cooling system on most PAS systems ain't exactly sophisticated.

Which is what it's there for.

Perhaps you never use full throttle either?

I did think of adding that to my post, but then thaught, why would anyone do that. Anymore than they'd hold a manual steering box at full lock for any length of time. For all practical purposes a p/s box can be treated the same as a manual one. Mike.

"Mike G" mumbled:

Because they can? People do the strangest of things.

The noise is cavitation the formation of micro bubbles of vapour within the fluid because of a sudden change in pressure it can cause pitting to the surfaces of the pump and valve -- best avoided if possible.

Best not to be concerned about it IMO. If you need to use full lock, do so. Used occasionally, or as and when req'd, the chances of damaging the valve is virtually non existant. Mike.

Dave Plowman mumbled:

Sure, but there's a difference between holding it jammed against full lock or backing it off a tad (not enough to turn the wheels appreciably) so it doesn't labour the pump.
