I bought a 206 last weekend. 1.4 on a T plate with 82K on the clock. Drove it 20 odd miles home with no problems. I've had it parked up in the drive since, as I've not taxed it yet. Started it up this evening and the revs shot straight up to 2.7K and stayed there. Turned it off then on again - same thing. Turned it off then on and it idled perfectly. Any ideas as to what to look for? Car is for daughter to learn to drive, so I've got t get this right - can't take any chances.

Most likely it is the idle speed control valve sticking open. You can check by pulling it out, cleaning the internals with brake/throttle cleaner and then re-lubricate the internals with a light oil. If that cures it then get a new one on order because it won't stay like that for too long.
If that doesn't work then you could be looking at a failing throttle position sensor (connected to pedal or the throttle body). This is easiest to diagnose with an analogue multimeter: check the resistance as you move the pedal (with the ignition OFF), it should be smooth change with no jumps or drop outs as it moves from a low to high reading (or vice versa depending on which two contacts you have the meter connected to)..
