I'd check that the idle control valve isn't gummed up first.

Cheers for your suggestions lads, I took it to the AA and they plugged it into a computer for free and it said that two of the spark plugs have failed.

They said they will be happy to replace plugs and leads on Monday mornin, for £60 so I'll see how that goes.

Best to use genuine Ford/Motorcraft plugs and leads on these engines.
