If it's an early non VANOS (variable valve timing) engine, it's at least as reliable as the earlier single cam version. And *a lot* more powerful. Only thing really to watch for is to use good oil and change it by the service indicator - a gently driven one can suffer from sticking valves (uneven idle).

Its had fully synthetic since new and its absolutely quiet at 184000.

Yup - it's the high mileage ones that *don't* suffer, it seems. Worst is those just used for shopping runs.

You don't really hear a sticking valve on these though - just get an uneven idle.

Turbine smooth, these BMW sixes.
