Hourly Garage Labour Rates?

Hi Rob,

My dealer has a coffee area with a TV, and newspapers, and shiny metal tables, and chairs, and clean marble efffect tiled floors, and flowers set out nicely around the place, and a service manager, and a receptionist, and a partsman, and a supervisor, and some technicians, etc etc etc, and he charges £90 per hour.

A local mechanic (who was trained by the same dealer but who left to start and run his own business) has none of the above, but charges £18 per hour.

I know who I use . . .

Similar to above - Land Rover Franchise charge about £90 for their technicians knowledge and the local garage who specialise in Land Rovers charge £30-£35 per hour. Not tried the guy who recently left the main dealer, but we have his number!

My local independent specialist charges 29.50+VAT per hour.

It is also worth considering that a £30 an hour geezer who knows what he is doing will do an hour's work in an hour. A £20 an hour monkey will take an hour to botch an hour's work and then another hour rebotching it.

very true. Sadly, you often get monkeys working on yer motor at the

90-quid-an-hour dealership. Hence trying to locate garages by recommendation, where possible.

Tell us where you are Rob and I'm sure someone will be able to recommend a reasonable, reliable mechanic near you. Cheers

Just wondering how much a mechanic working for a main dealer gets paid out of that £90 per hour!

Can anyone advise please is there an average, hourly labour rate for garage services/repairs etc? Does it depend on the vehicle involved? (mine's an '84 Rangie)

Many thanks
