I have a SAAB 9000 CDE that has a MPG display.
After a few thousand miles it has settled to around 33 mpg, which I'm quite please with.
How accurate are these displays?

Have a good waggle of the igntion key back and forth slightly after you've started the engine. These often wear and go faulty and cut power to the fuel pump- especially if you have a big weight of other keys hanging on the fob.
Otherwise fuel pump relays often die on the 850 too.

There is no flow meter on a 9000.
The answer is that they aren't very accurate at all, neither is the range-to-empty calculation. If you want to know your MPG, you have to do it the old fashioned way.

More likly done electroncially by measuring and summing injector durations. Where they fail is variations in fuel pressure are not taken account of.

Yes.
Sound about right if you're doing a lot of motorway driving, assuming it's a
150 bhp 2.0 LPT. Even if not 100% accurate, the MPG display is still useful for diagnosing differences.Join the Discussion
