Smoking Escort

Hi,

I`ve got a 94, L Reg Escort. Its a 1.4i (CVH)

Just had it MOT, and failed on emmisions. Its badly burning oil at around

5000rpm. Hardrocarbons are at about 345 and co is at about 5.432. I`ve change the steamseals as was suggested by the garage but with no affect. Im possibly thinking the Piston Ring are worn, i`ve tested the compression and got the following results:

No 1 Cylinder - 131psi No 2 Cylinder - 130psi No 3 Cylinder - 125psi No 4 Cylinder - 132psi

I`ve also put some oil down the plug hole and re-did the compression which came out with the following:

No 1 Cylinder - 132psi No 2 Cylinder - 131psi No 3 Cylinder - 127psi No 4 Cylinder - 131psi

Anybody got any Ideas what this could be? I`ve re-ground all the valves in and checked the Head its all fine. Timing is ok, getting around 37mpg, running like a dream just this bloody burning oil problem.

Any Help would be appriciated Si

Your failure is not the oil burning. Your fail is the high co, this is caused by a rich (petrol) mixture. Likely causes are often discussed on here but might be the coolant temperature sensor or just something silly like blocked breather.

Oil burning at high revs is likely to be: overfull of oil, blocked breather system, piston/rings. this is a really easy engine to do the rings on.

If the piston rings where changed what else would need changing?

Is it worth doing the Oil scrapers and everything at the same time? What the approx cost? anybody know roghly?

Cheers MCN

If you want a reasonable life, it will probably need a re-bore, which of course means new pistons too. And check the crankshaft while you're at it. In other words, a full re-con. It would probably be simpler just to fit a secondhand engine.

the rings come as a set with the oil control rings, about 40 quid plus gaskets 25 quid plus oil and filter 25 quid plus cambelt/tensioner 40 quid plus stretch bolts 15 quid plus your labour. you need to at least hone the bores while the top and bottom are off, if well worn then a rebore will be needed.

quite frequently though, the oil rings get very gummed up and let oil past, so the bores/pistons are not necessarily worn out.

The car. By the time you'd paid out for a rebore, new pistons, rings and a full gasket set then even assuming you're donig the work yourself you've far exceeded what the car is worth. N reg Escorts at local auction have been struggling to get £200.

Don't go on the pistons kick, its not that and there are various reasons. If the engine was burning significant amounts oil the compression would be dire, and those compressions readings are not bad at all - I take it that

130 is with spec?

Run with the something silly idea.

By the way, apart from wearing out the engine as if you were driving it to the scrap yard, what are doing up at level of RPM anyway?
