Thaughts about car reliability.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Ivan" saying something like:

All those past Skoda/Lada owners have something more modern to buy now.

Anybody remember the Dacia Denem? A Romanian Renault 12 - what a heap of s*it that was.

I think the days of the Skodas and Ladas of 20 years ago are long past, after all we now live in the totally new age of globalization, I'm old enough to remember when people almost rolled on the floor with laughter at the very suggestion of the Japanese ever making any kind of inroads into our electronics and motor Industries.

We've already lost more than a million manufacturing jobs over the last 10 years including several major car manufacturing plants, why do you appear to believe that if say Ford set up a production plant in China to produce something like a clone of a basic focus for distribution through no frills dealerships at rock bottom prices, that the end product is going to be vastly inferior to vehicles manufactured in Europe or the U.S.?

I don't 'appear to believe' that at all. In fact I was quite taken with some of the s**te cars made by the former Eastern Bloc - one or two of them had that indefineable quality of 'character' as they spluttered to a halt on a rainy night.

Indeed, if Ford or GM started importing a vehicle that sold for one-third of the current sort of price I might buy one, just for a laugh.
