tyres with low road noise

I currently have Pirelli tyres and I dont know if it's them or just the car but the road noise really annoys me. Maybe it's also because so many roads nowadays are in badly worn condition. Are there any tyres people can recommend that are quieter than average?

MichaelS (MichaelS ) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

What model Pirelli, what size, on what car?

I'm presuming by "Don't know if it's them or the car" that you've not long had the car, and haven't tried it on other tyres.

Basic rule of thumb is that the higher the profile, the more "civilised" they are, in terms of both ride quality and noise.

They are Pirelli 175/65 R 14 on a Rover 25. They handle quite well I find, but I do notice quite a lot of road noise.

Google for tyre reviews. I've seen some that include noise, along with the ones you'd expect like wet and dry road grip etc. Mike.

MichaelS was thinking very hard :

If they are P6000 then they have a reputation for noise. I have them, but even on my fairly quiet car I cannot hear them - I do hear the clock though.

I guess it depends how much sound proofing a car has too.

I rented a 07 Fiate Grande Punte, advertised on TV as being a car light years ahead of anything else... But I was amazed at the level of tyre noise level on such a 'modern' car. The engine was smooth and quiet, but that didn't help on the tyre noise of course.

Recently whilst driving on several different motorways I've noticed that large stretches of the nearside lane on a number of them have been recently resurfaced with a nice smooth finish, whilst the surface of the other two lanes still consist of the the usual mixture of course gravel and tarmac which tends to generate a fair amount road noise, so staying in the 'slow' lane gives a much quieter and smoother drive. I wonder if this is a deliberate policy done as an attempt to slow traffic down by 'encouraging' drivers to keep as much as possible in that lane?

I'd guess more likely that the nearside lane got worn out by lorries, so got replaced, wheras the other ones were still ok. The replacement was just a different surface.

cheers, clive
