vulcanised repair

I got a nail in one of my tyres that I had only just bought at a price of £80.

I took it for repair but it turns out the nail had went through the tread and into the sidewall of the tyre so it was irreparable.

The garage recommended another tyre firm who "might" send the tyre away to be vulcanised at a cost of £15.

Has anyone any experience of this? Is it safe? Can the sidewall actually be repaired?

It certainly beats forking out another £80 if it can be done.

If it can be done does anyone have any other tyre firms around Glasgow that offer the service.

cheers

Steven.

No. The tyre is buggered.

If you really mean the sidewall then you're stuffed, sidewall damage can not be repaired.

Sounds like the tyre is scrap. I know its locking the stable etc. but you can now take out tyre insurance that covers accidental, deliberate and theft damage. IIRC it is about fifty quid a year, could be good value if you have little luck or expensive tyres.

Can you recommend somewhere?

I have had 5 new tyres in under a year. For some strange reason most of the nails I get seem to puncture the car right in between the tread and the sidewall. I don't deliberately drive near building sites or anywhere else I can think of that would have crap lying around.

I guess I'm just really unlucky.

Wrong. It can be repaired providing it is done correctly. Years ago my=20 friend used ot work at a tyre repairers who did alot of this kind of=20 repair but they were the only ones in East Yorks.

I saw the leaflet in a local Vauxhall dealership (Tony Levoi, ESSEX) So try a VX dealer first.

Are you talking about sidewall or edge of tread area repair ? I've never heard of side wall repair (as a repair and not as part of a 'remanufacturing' process) but you can get the area were the tread joins the side wall vulcanised.

Think it depends on whether the actual carcass is damaged or not.

Perhaps you have a kitchen fitter living near you who sweeps out his van? ;-)

THe sidewall. Puncture type holes such as those from a nail can be=20 repaired. Rips are another story.

I live in a cul-de-sac and my neighbour is a joiner with a transit that parks on the road!! I think you have knocked the nail on the head there :o)

When the car came to rest the nail must have been directly on the road. It must have went in it an angle via the tread. So once the air started to escape, the tyre became flatter and flatter until the nail broke through the side wall near the rim that goes onto the wheel.
