VW Cambelt question?

Calling VW experts.

Just bought a 1.8T ST Bora. - 52 reg from my local VW dealer.

- I'm picking it up next week.

I asked the salesman about servicing, and particularly about cambelts.

He said that the cambelt does not need replacing until at least

100,000 miles.

- apparently the valves a positioned out of the way of the pistons, so if the belt does snap, no damage is caused.

Sounds pretty cool - can anyone confirm this?

Regards,

Chris.

Well it's changed then, it used to be recommended at 120000 but most of the world recommends 80000 as when it broke it wrecked the engine. Of course you have discovered what the salesmans job is.

have a look in the handbook, service manual or Haynes book.

If it's a '52 reg you should have the service record with the car, surely?

If > 40,000 is specified, then replace at 2/3 of the mileage for safety.

(Before anyone asks, I replaced my Cavalier religiously at 40k no problems, but I've heard some stories ...)

Hi,

thanks for the replies.

The car's an ex demonstrator, and has only done 2,900 miles.

- they're going to service it anyway before I pick it up (or so they say).

My question isn't really what the cambelt replacement interval is - I think he said it was 120k. What I really want to know is, is the salesman's claim about no damage being caused if the belt snaps true.

Thanks,

Chris.

Not according to any of the references I've got, they all claim the 20V

1.8 is an interference engine

The 20v engine is certainly not a non-interference engine I can assure you. Both the previous (now discontinued) NA and current turbo 20valvers will suffer a wrecked head if the belt breaks.

Thanks for the info.

I remember a BBC Watchdog article a while ago about a security issue on most of the VW range.

Does anyone know if VW fixed this problem?

The car I'm buying is a 52 Reg Bora, registered September 2002 - Is my car going to be affected?

Thanks,

Chris

What about a 1991 2L 8v 4cyl injection as fitted to passats, audi

80's, etc? Some places say it's non interference but some seem a bit more vague.
