What are the signs of hydraulic lifters failing

Hi,

How can you tell if the hydraulic lifters are failing?

Car is a 1.7TD 1997 Astra Estate, with 119,000 on the clock.

Cheers

Ian

You get the 'CVH Death Rattle'

Oh, they do that as standard. Could be an issue in a diesel ;-)

Engine sounds like it has excessive tappet clearance. Mike.

Regular light tapping from top end - can sound a bit like a badly adjusted tappet (if you can remember those days).

If you are getting such a noise, then it disappears when the oil has warmed up - or even just after a few seconds running after a cold start/ first start of the day - that can be a good indication.
