Could well be, it is just like the engine is turned off. One of the joys of a diesel was its easy pull away without fuss.
On the other hand, it's now possible to get a 2lt TDI with more power than an Integrale / Impreza Turbo whilst turning in nearly 50mpg.
I remember my driving instructor's Mk2 Fester Diesel. Idle, slowly clutch out... Biting point is where the top of the steering wheel turns into a blur.
the 12 plate mondeo 2l tdwhatever I had in the other day returns over 55 normally and 50 with a fair size caravan, performance unloaded is really good and pretty effortless when rolling at speed. It came in for rear wheel bearing noise, which is apparently a common problem.
BMW's x25d lump is quite astonishing.
215bhp. 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and 45-50mpg.I wish I'd sacrificed leather for the 25d engine now - jumping into the
120d after driving the Boxster makes it feel incredibly slow!
It's f***ed! LOLK
Trust nobody.
ECU strategy for MANY vehicles DMF-equiped is to cut the engine dead when rpm's drop to a certain level in order to preserve the DMF. -- So yes- very easy to stall.
Although i note that late BMW's and some Fords have the opposite strategy- when you touch the clutch pedal idle rpm's rise to ~1200rpm to aid a stall / shudder free take off...
tim..
Which one would that be?
Given that the Integrale was 185bhp (8v) or 200bhp (16v) out the box, and the Impreza Turbo started off with less than 208bhp, you could take a reasonably wide choice. If you want a specific example, then how about the F30 325d's 214bhp and official 61mpg from 1995cc?
(Oh, and FWIW, I'll take the 'grale _any_ day of the week, thanks...)
What you mean is if you choose the Impreza carefully, you can find one to suit the argument? ;-)
Would the Lotus tweaked one at 400 bhp still be beaten in power by a 2 litre diesel? ;-)
Umm, no, not really. He said "An Impreza turbo", not "every Impreza turbo ever built or modified or played with"
A 214bhp 2.0 50+mpg diesel BMW is more powerful than a standard, original
208bhp Impreza Turbo. (The engine'll probably last longer, too, although the Subaru will definitely sound better)
Right. The latest diesel can be better than a 20 year old version of a petrol engine? Not really much of a comparison. ;-)
Given that the examples were chosen to show just how much diesels have moved on in the last couple of decades, I'd say it was a great comparison to make.
Considering the comparison was "More power than very highly regarded and very high performance cars of a generation ago, whilst retaining economy that would have been regarded as good for a diesel back then", then - yep
- seems a fairly good comparison.
'course, "Mmm, yep, you're right - it's amazing what lobbing a fuckload of slightly-too-fragile technology at a problem can do, isn't it?" would have been a perfectly appropriate response...
It's more like the yes no claims for Scottish independence. Compare apples with oranges and fiddle the figures too.
One thing is sure - I'd not get 50+ mpg with a 2 litre BMW.
