A digital card????

Hi all,

Finally had my fill of the winter here in Maine. called ins company a put insurance back on Lil' Blue and took her out for a ride. Still can't get the grin off my face. Now a question for ya'll. I've been in the car a few times since I put it up for the winter and all was fine. Until today. Everything runs fine but when I got in I found this kinda "card" on the floor under the steering wheel. Have no idea what it goes to or what it might control. Because everything ran fine, I just tossed it over the console and into the passenger seat and went for my ride. While riding I stopped into my local mazda dealership (I wasn't expecting much and was not surprised) to ask if they knew what this was. Only thought they had was `"maybe" some sort of alarm. Well, as far as I know I've never had an alarm. Could one of you take a look at the picture in the provided link and possibly tell me what this thing is?

OH geeze, Here I am talking to myself! Forgot to mention that Lil" Blue is a 96 with auto (I know!) tranny. But I love her anyway.

If you really want to know what it is, you could look up the patent numbers at the PTO web site:

It might be an alarm antenna or keyless entry antenna....

Yes, it definitely looks like an antenna.

Looks like an antenna of some type to me also. To what I'd have no idea, though, beyond what the others have said. I know what you mean about the long winter thing. I took mine out late Sunday afternoon, after I thawed the door to her tent with hot water to get it open. Only took it up the road and back, but it never gets old, that feeling of "man I love this car". I took yesterday off from work and drove up to South Paris on personal business, and put the top down for most of the day. Awesome day for it. Tomorrow is supposed to be even better.

It is definitely an antenna of some sort. Did you buy the car new or used? I am not too familiar with the M1s, but does it have keyless entry? You might want to look under the steering wheel and see if there are any wires that are not connected to anything or do not look stock. It does not sound like it is anything vital to your car, but the sure curiosity of what it is for would kill me until I knew!

Thanks to all that replied. I guess the consensus is some kind of antenna. Something I failed to mention is that this thing is still attached somewhere under the dash and above the steering wheel. My poor eyesight will not allow me to see exactly where. The wire coming out from that attachment point to the card is at least three feet long, which allows me to throw the card over onto the passenger seat. No keyless entry...just the keyholes. I'll probably just wrap the whole mess up in tape and stuff it back up under the dash *when* I find out just what it is. I bought the car last summer from a dealer in New Hampshire. Not good records but I do know it originally came from Florida. Not that that means anything. There are a couple more Mazda dealers within an hour ride from me. The next nice day when the roads are dry, I'll take a ride to them and see if they know what it might be. Thanks to all again.

The girl at the insurance company was laughing at me again. When the switchboard girl transferred me over to her, her first words to me were, "I'll bet you wanna turn the ins on for that convertable again"? I told her YES, but keep it on permenantly this time. It may be early, but the nice days will be more frequent as the season wears on.
