Turbocharger.
It has been wisely said before (and, regrettably, I did not make this up): The best performance investment is competition driving school.

Well he did specify he wanted better performance from the engine, not from the car. ;)
Absolutely true, but when you come out of that perfectly executed corner that you learned to do and come onto the straight and begin the LONG crawl to 100+ mph, (compared to 10-15 pounds of boost), the desire for more power becomes very understandable.
Of course, if the goal is simply drag-racing, I would go with another car, though it is kind of nifty to see the worried looks on Mustang and Camaro driver's faces when I keep up with them from light to light in a little 4-banger.
One asked if I had a V-8, I just told him that it is a 1.8 liter and I didn't mention the turbo. I don't think that many people understand power-to-weight ratio, for most it seems to be all horsepower and *maybe* torque numbers to them.

Very good point. For all we know, this person could an instructor at a driving school. Not likely, but possible. As you pointed out, there was no question on how to improve the OP's driving abilities, only how to improve engine performance.
