84 300 TD Wagon Cold Weather Starting Tips

When expecting really, really cold weather like we have now:

PREPARATIONS:

  1. Adjust the valves; 2. New battery; 3. Test glow plugs (just make sure all 5 work); 4. Use 0w40 Mobil 1. 5. Add 10% gasoline or 30-50% kerosene to your fuel to make sure it does not gel. STARTING:
  2. Glow longer than the light suggests (watch til the battery light brightens to see when the glow timer actually turns off the plugs, then turn the key off and back on to glow again; Crank the engine without touching the accelerator until you hear the engine make firing sounds, then SLIGHT pedal movement.3. DO NOT make repeated starting attempts- crank til it starts. You only get one try. Bill Ditmire Ditmire Motorworks,Inc.

A 120v block heater is the way to go, but has to be installed. Look on eBay for the heater at a good price.
