Ah righty. Not a problem then :)

...exactly what you get in the Shuttle cases !

Nope - it splits according to the resistance of each path, so the strand with least resistance will carry the largest current, but they all carry thier share.

It does generate heat - the amount of power dissipated in the wire (P) is given by: P= I*I*R or, equivalently P= (V*V)/R

Where R is the total resistance of the wire (about 0.01 ohms per metre for 8-strands of cat5), I is the current flowing, and V is the voltage _drop_ along the wire.

So, if we have 5 metres of cable, R=0.05 ohms. Say current is 20 amps, then power = 20*20*0.05 = 20watts. However, this is distributed along 5 metres, so only 4 watts per metre - not enough to heat it to melt the insulation, so no fire.

Still, it'd be a bloody stupid choice of cable :-)

If they did, creative would not make so much money selling soundcards. No internal soundcard with minijacks can be as good as a proper external box.

Nom, you're wrong. There's even a standard for it IEEE802.3af. Take a look at

Ah, I see.

It's yonks since I did A-Level physics :)

Agreed !

You're missing the point - they're all low power applications.

A decent car ICE setup, can draw a MASSIVE amount of current, for which CAT5 is not suitable !

Heh. Ah, well, it's my job - I'm not really allowed to forget it :-)

... and peace and harmony fell across the usergroups. For about 5 minutes, until everyone got bored and started slagging each other off....

In article , snipped-for-privacy@Somewhere.Somewhere spouted forth into uk.rec.cars.modifications...

I didn't mean run the Car Audio itself over Cat 5.

Nope, just use it to run things like HDD data, power and serial device data and power, things that are low voltage (either 12 or 5 V) and lowish Current.

Well it was a pretty extreme setup to say the least - and I can't imagine that many people would actually have any use for that kind of power. As it was, it was being used at a large outdoor music concert, and the cables that we ended up using were around 1 1/2 inches in diameter :-) God knows what they cost though....
