The distributor could in theory be fitted in any orientation since it's gear driven provided you also swap the plug leads around. Although the amp needs to be cooled as well as possible by the air stream.

But the one pic I've got of a Land Rover installation does show a different version of the distributor to the SD1 - the amp is opposite the vac unit rather than at 90 degrees as in the SD1. And the amp is positioned at the passenger's side rather than front as on the SD1.

Ah, OK, amp on the passenger side, yes, capsule on the drivers side. Although if it has a much less static advance I can't see the module=20 getting any cooling.

It just doesn't seem to give much room for the adjust the timing. Unless the vac advance has been disconnected inside for some time, and=20 it has been fitted with maximum static advance which might go to=20 explaining why it was totally flat when driven.

You normally go for more advance than the factory setting with these V-8s, and I can't explain why unless it's modern petrol. About 30 degrees maximum advance seems to work which is roughly 6 more than factory. But the thing to note is the actual timing marks are often inaccurate. If the vacuum unit was disconnected inside the rotating plate on the distributor would have nothing to locate it. If the vacuum unit is suspect new ones are on Ebay all the time.

When the vac unit was unbolted, the rod inside it was a small hole in=20 wasn't connected to the pin on the plate, but I could see the pin on the=20 plate.

When I get the cap off I'll see if it can be relocated.
