If they cant do a simple weld like that I hate to think what horrors are hidden.

I don't know if you know how to weld or not Carl but if you are loolking at projects like this then I would suggest you learn if only to appreciate the work of others.

The only welding it would have needed are the floor patch/replacment welds to make it legal. And floor pans for Amazons are still available from Volvo, whole or in repair sections.

Come the apocalypse, that car will be common place. it is the whole Madmax 2/Rat/Mutant scene that is very quickly catching the show and shine trailer queen brigade. God imagine actualy modifying any car in a way that made it legal and improved mechanically but neglected the exterior. It could never happen.

Making something legal for an MOT doesn't make it any less of a death-trap. I certainly wouldn't want to drive a car with a roof held on that badly. Not only would it come straight off if you managed to roll the car over, but it will have no structural integrity at all - it'll make a C900 look like an example of how to cure scuttle shake....

You have properly looked at the quality of that welding, haven't you? - it looks like someone who's never used welding kit before did it.

Chicken s*it welding, it's a sign it's been done badly, there shoud be no spatter to grind back. As I said in my other post if a nice easy weld like that is a mess then I hate to think what the rest of it's like.

If you look under the blackboard paint on a good rat you can see it's a solid well done machine underneath, that Volvo looked like a old snotter that someone has badly hacked about and will cost a small fortune to correct, quite frankly it's not worth it, it was "well cheap" for a very good reason.

Seriously, the whole thing needed stripping back to bare metal, *huge* amounts of *proper* welding (including taking the roof off and putting it back on properly) and paint. That's just for starters.

How many people on here have the time / energy / space / equipment to do that? - not many....... so there's a nice bill for close on 10 times purchase price just to get it into any sort of shape before you've even started looking at what else needs doing.

Exactley. Volvo running gear has to be worth that for spares alone.

That's true for so many cars. It's just not a viable proposition to do it. The biggest breaker around here has just invested in a machine to shred whole cars as, unless the parts are particularly valuable or sought after, it's more cost effective to shred rather than strip.
