OT: New Job

You could be a contract web dev. We're paying a guy =A3280 per day at the moment. Also he's a limited company, meaning he pays himself bugger all salary and gives himself the rest in dividends (which are only taxed @ 19% and no NI) so he takes home most of it too.

Not a change of direction but the extra money will make up for that. You could take 6 months of the year off and still have more money than you do now.

How do I get into that sort of thing? IT's a bit daunting in that there are so many potential areas to get into and I'm not 100% sure what I want to choose, and even with web development there are a million and one different platforms/languages to know. What's the best paying stuff to be proficient at, and what sort of decent training courses are available?

And no, I don't expect to go straight in contracting at £280/day!

How's he bypassing IR35 then?

cheers, clive

Nobody expects you to know all the platforms and languages but to be really hot in one or two areas is useful, particularly if those areas are the in thing at the moment.

Somebody somewhere will need for example an MCMS whizzkid who knows SQL Server inside out and a bit of Java, and they'll pay =A3280+ per day for it.

Best to get a good grounding in the technologies in the ordinary workplace or through personal projects for a few years and then go into contracting if you have the skills that are in demand. There are loads of agencies who will have a database of contractors and their skills and match them to jobs as and when they come in.

Don't know about training. But .NET based anything is a buzz word to be able to tout. Anything Microshaft, or now Java. Unfortunatley, as I'm Linux/Mysql/PostGresQL/PHP/PERL/Apache experienced, self taught, and out of practice, since the last 7 years have been mainly spent setting up new dialup Virtual ISPs, and more recently ADSL Virtual ISPs (over 600 dialup, and 200 ADSL between the two companies I have worked for) I seem to be worth close to less than f*ck all.

I left the last job because I was sick of setting up dialup Visps. Joined this firm because I wanted to get back into building websites. Built two large sites in the first 3 months, then once I had a written contract specifying 2 months notice and "other duties that the company see fit", I suddenly found myself required to actually write a dialup platform, 3 months to learn a language and build a sellable platform in ASP, all by my self. Since it was finished I have had the duty of adding new clients to it myself, because Sales can't be trusted to do it, and Admin can't be trusted to do it accuratley.

So I have been reduced to the level of account managers assistant and admin clerk, for the last 5 years. and there appear to be f*ck all jobs arround, and I fancy a change but don't know what.

Would love to open a secondhand book shop, but there is no money in it, and most go bust within 6 months.

Something to do with getting his wife to "do some of the work"? I don't know the details but it seems to work for him.

But they burn dirty oil don't they? I thought the petrol ones used superchargers for big power, that and loads of CCs

Thought maybe mobile aircon, that way I get to drive like a total tosser in a white van.

It'll be relying on the IR/whatever their name is now not actually bothering to check. Ie he's probably breaking the rules, but chances are he'll get away with it.

cheers, clive

Just as the rain comes as well.

Does this mean you'll have more beer tokens for the car(s)?

Nah, it's about the same, but, more importantly, it gives me more time and energy for them.

Nononono... like I told you, do that but combined with tyres etc. Tyres are pretty much recession proof as they're a legal requirement. When money's tight and the aircon needs gassing, people will just drive with the window down.

Trust me I looked _seriously_ into it and the figures are good for mobile tyres + aircon combined but not aircon alone.

By not doing most of his work for one company - it's not rocket science...

No, they make a few engines with petrol as the fuel, and turbocharging as the method of stuffing more air in.

And Vamp could end up with one...

You're learning. Sod all point having lots of beer tokens if you've no time/are too knackered to use them. :-)

i'll NEVER have a wanky smart! and they cost to much :-P

Oh wait, mid engined, two seater, turbo charged and with a Mercedes badge. Could be worse. They do do a dirty oil version too, but that doesn't have a turbo.

Oh year, would include tyres, and maybe do a hookup with a mobile wheel refurber too. Wouldn't just limit myself.
