I've got a basic idea of how superchargers work and would consider getting one, but I can't figure out why they seem to be so expensive. Looking for a specific kit for my engine (GM 3.8 V6 in a 98 Firebird) and net dealers are charging in the region of $3500. Are these overpriced kits, where a generic product would do the same thing? Or is there really some justification for these sort of prices?

Fair enough, can't imagine what's quite so expensive about their production tho. Can they not make generic ones which will fit a range of engines, thereby reducing the cost? The one for my car is specific to the 98 Firebird and fits no other year - if they're having to produce such specific products (and so in very small numbers) I guess that could partly explain the cost.

GM already built a supercharged 3.8 V6 Buick. You see plenty of superchargers for them for sale on Ebay. You'd probably be best just to get a complete car that's being broken and take all the parts you need off it, or just change the complete engine if it's the same.
The supercharger's not specific to the car it only has to be the right size to suit the engine and how much power you want from it, it's all the mounting brackets and pulley system that need to be made to mount the supercharger onto the engine that's specific. Lots of superchargers to choose from here
A Commdore runs the Buick V6 and the Capa kit should fit that. Holden brought out a factory blown 6.

May be a bit undersized for a 3.8L could always run it a bit faster but I don't think it would like going twice as fast.
