I was pricing a GT , and it looked like adding ABS (with Traction control) is actually an extra charge ? I thought that at least ABS was pretty much standard now on every car.....

Well, true performance-driving nuts, err, enthusiasts, eschew it.
Like, my *2002 Mazda Miata SE* doesn't have it.

Its reverting back to being an option on most cars as new model changeovers happen. I think most people (like myself) have found that its mostly just hype, and more expensive parts to fix latter on. If you don't plan on driving in snow and ice, and don't drive like an idiot (i.e. tailgating or yapping on a cell phone) I'd skip it and save yourself some head aches down the road.

The truth is MOST people don't know how to drive antilock brakes. The benefit of being able to steer under maximum braking is very seldom used. Most people are completely clueless and when confronted with an emergency just slam on the brakes and plow straight ahead.

Air bags are seldom used too. When you need em there's no substitute.

Yes but air bags are passive and require no training to use effectively (other than buckling up). Antilock brakes CAN reduce stopping times under certain conditions (not ice and snow) but their primary benefit, being able to steer under maximum braking, is very seldom used because drivers are not trained to use it. IE, antilock brakes are not passive devices and in themselves are not effective in avoiding accidents.
So Iwould counter that "Antilock brakes are seldom used. When you need em there's no substitute IF you know how to use them.
The insurance industry expected that antilock brakes would reduce accident claims and gave discounts for vehicles with antilock brakes. Time has proven, however, there is absolutely no difference in the accident statistics between car with and without antilock brakes. Obviously they dont give discounts for antilock brakes anymore.

That's not quite accurate. There is quite a difference between the statistics. The problem is that some types of accidents went down and other types went up so there was no significant OVERALL benefit. The full report is available.
