Still stuck, H or X pipes

Apr 21, 2004 13 Replies

I am still looking for some input on H or X pipes. I have an 89 GT vert, 2 chamber Flowmaster 40's. I keep reading that Basanni off road X pipes are nice, but with the Flows, the sound gets raspy. I don't know what that raspy sound, sounds like. I want the car to growl. Should I get H's or X's. I need help. Thanks.

If you want a growl...get the H.

I personally think the X's are better for the 4.6's - they get more of a 'scream' in my terms and TO ME every 5.0 sounds 'wrong', not bad but wrong to me with an x pipe. I have been VERY happy with my H pipe even though to many I get less of a performance gain, the sound is well worth the 'loss'.

I used way too many ''s in here.....

Good Luck either way though, it's a mustang so you can't really go wrong either way :)

IMHO, H-pipes are better for 5.0s. The Xpipe I have on the wife's 02GT sounds good, but it all depends on which catback you have. I'm not a fan of Xpipes with anything but the catback she has. I say go with the Hpipe. KJ

89 GT with the same mufflers. I have a custom o/r h-pipe.

It sounds fine. I just removed my 2.5" tail pipes and put the little turn downs on the back of the muffler back on and it is definately at least a 3 ringer in a parking lot. Old ladies make a lemon face and small children burst into tears.

X pipes make more power and the difference in sound is very slight.

true about the power, but the difference in sound still goes back to personal preference :-P

'73 Mustang, 302 4 bbl, Holley 600, all stock, 3" duals all the way back, no mufflers, sounds like heaven! The neighbors hate me though...

H pipes are designed for chambered mufflers, X pipes are designed for straight thru mufflers, with your mufflers I'd use the H pipe.

Whatever you do, do not buy a bbk x pipe. Their x design is very poor and leads to some nasty sounds. For an X pipe the way to go is Dr. Gas since he developed them.

I have a similiar setup with long tubes, h-pipe, and 40 series deltas, no tailpipes. Nothing yet has beat driving thru the Best Buy parking lot, and setting off the 'proximity alarms' on all the employee ricers as I rumbled by them.

I have a factory H, and just as soon as I possibly can, I'm swapping it out for an X
