Want More Power for 91 5.0 LX

Apr 18, 2004 5 Replies

I have a stock '91 5.O LX HO EFI. Only mod is K&N EFI Air Filter. I want more off the line and mid range, and a deeper growl would be nice :-) Not bothered with top end - just want a street sleeper.

Which one would you recommend next? Chip (which one)? Exhaust? Fuel Pump? Headers?

Thx

In this order:

Gears

3.55's (or 3.73's) with a 5 spd. 3.73's (or 4.10's) with an AOD Exhaust. Shorty headers, high flow cat system, quality cat-back system (I like dynomax/Walker). Replace it all. Shifter Quality aftermarket shifter if it is a 5 spd Convertor Nice higher stall torque convertor if it's an AOD Mass air meter/throttle body At least make your mass air meter bigger than your throttle body. Inrease both if you'd like.

Go with the deeper gears listed above if you don't care about top end and top speed. The higher the number, the lower your top speed will be. But if you aren't going to have it over 110 mph ever, who cares if it'll go 130?

Before you try any of Steve's excellent suggestions, fill the tank with 93 octane and set the timing to 15. If it's truly stock, your timing will be set at around 10 or 12 so it'll run on regular. If you don't want to run premium, ignore all responses to your original post.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's even lower than stock. Every 5.0 that I bought (all used) were actually much lower than even the factory settings were supposed to be. With the cost of today's premium, that can get spendy though.

True, but I don't think you can have it both ways. If you're going to make more power, it'll cost you in fuel and/or mods. Now the Torquemonster does run pretty well on 87 weasel piss, but it only gets around 12-14mpg. Ya just can't win...
