Does anyone know why my 1990 Nissan Maxima sometimes (more not than does) does not allow me to shift out of park without holding down the manual unlock? Sometimes I hear a clicking and it works like it should, but most of the time it doesn't let me. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Might be that the neutral safety switch in conjunction with applying the brake (switched together) isn't releasing properly. I have a manual tranny but do know the brake must be applied and that monitoring switch must signal the neutral safety switch that it's OK to allow the shift. One or the other may be faulty or out of adjustment.
You either have a bad shift lock solenoid or shift lock controller unit. Solenoid is cheap, controller is kinda 'spensive. But it's worth fixing for convenience and safety.
