Help with Steering Wheel access / Radio Controls Problem

Hey folks,

I have a 1994 GP with steering wheel radio controls.

Several years ago I had problems with the volume control not functioning properly - it would lower the volume suddenly without me touching it.

It was fixed under warranty - a wiring harness was replaced. Even had the part # from the invoice.

Well it is happening again. This time the dealer (same) checked it out and found no problems with wiring so they believe it is just a bad volume control button, and want to replace it. I said yes - order the expensive part... But now that I think about it - I REALLY don't think it is the volume button.

Because at times the volume button is working fine for me, but the PRESET button on the other side of the steering wheel will not function. And then later on the preset button will work fine.

So I don't believe my dealer is correct. I'd like to check it out myself, but I really have no idea how to get into my steering column. Ok well I have an idea that you just pull back the vinyl face that covers the air bag. (And probably have to remove fuses for the airbag system)

But I'd really just like some advice here... Can anyone give me any pointers? Or is there a particular repair manual that might cover this? I'd be more than happy to pay money for a book or go borrow it from the library - than to invest $200 in my dealer thinking it is the button and then still have the problem... And even if they refunded my money on the part, they'd still hit me for labor if they had to spend a couple hours doing work trying to figure out the problem.

Thanks!

Dirk
