DEEPNHOCK Follies - October, 2009

Finished painting the living room yesterday.. Wohoo.....ugh. Last week the neighborhood was wired for fibre optic. My place has (a) The old original TV antenna, (b) a Dish Network dish antenna, (c) a Hughesnet dish antenna. I looked at the old TV antenna, and since all the ladders were out...decided it's time had come. Put the extension ladder up against the 30 foot+ tall chimney and tried to unscrew the stainless self tapping concrete screws that held the bracket to the morter joint. NFW those were budging. Went out and got the bolt cutters and a hammer. Cut the bottom U-clamp holding the down tube to the mount bracket. No sweat. Whacked the stainless screws back and forth a few hits and they snapped off clean. Great... One down...one to go. Put the extension ladder on the side and used it to get up high enough to step over 'onto' the roof. Man-o-Manischevicz! The pitch does not look like much from the ground... But... I do this 'crawl' up to the very top ridge and straddle it like riding a horse. (That's when I heard the boom thunder rumble of an approaching thunderstorm... (not a peep until I was up top ) Leaning over, I used the bolt cutters to cut the u-bolt mount. Hard to do when you are holding the antenna, and trying to use both hands on the bolt cutter, all the while leaning over and reachung around the corner of the chimney. (But I had pulled up the co-ax and wrapped it over the top of the cimney and put it under my butt and sat on it so the antenna would not fall) Tossed the bolt cutters to the ground (out of any trajectory I might take) Whacked the stainless anchor screws and they snapped off clean. Cut the u-bolt mount to the antenna itself. Pulled up the down tube(s)...Separated them and tossed them down. Tried to 'fly' the antenna down like a paper airplane. It 'flew', but the glide ratio was about as good as a 2R10's might be

Tossed down the hammer....Checked the chimney, and the chimney cap.. Crab walked down and over to the ladder and got my butt off the roof and back on terra firma. Had about ten good minutes of clean up time, and then the 30 mph squall line came through and dumped a half inch of rain on us in a half hour... Next? Get the fibre optic (from out telephone co-op) all hooked up (to the TV, the 'puter router....the phone part is done now)... Then I can take down the mushrooms growing off the SW corner of the house... I'm sort of OK with heights... Jeff (Just down with landing after falling...) Rice
