96 Nissan Sentra, Need help replacing right outer cv joint boot

My 96 Sentra GXE has a torn right axle boot. I have two questions with regard to changing it out:

  1. Is there a anything I should know about taking the axle out of the transaxle?

  1. Can I take the outer cv joint off at the end of the shaft to take off the boot? Is there any major trick to taking the joint off. I have a shop manual, but it provides very little informaiton on this process.

Also, is it better to replace the shaft with a rebuilt one, even though I hear no clunking from the shaft?

Thanks, Al

You can replace just the boot. But there are 3 reasons why you should replace the whole axle assembly.

  1. Dirt still could have gotten into the boot through the tear. It's all down hill after that.
  2. You should be able to get a remand axle assembly with a life time warranty so if you keep the car long enough and this happens again you wont have to buy another axle.
  3. Once you have the old axle out all you have to do is put the new one in and go.

As far as getting the axle out you may have to have a bar and hammer and tunk it slightly to jar it lose from the tranny. Just don't go crazy with the hammer.
