Intake Manifold Gaskets

I'm putting an Offy 4BBL intake manifold on a '77 Ford T-Bird with a 400M engine. I had originally ordered Fel-Pro FPP-1240 Printoseal intake gaskets but have had problems installing the intake and trashed the gaskets. I left the distributor in and because of the angle needed to drop the intake I cannot use studs to hold the gaskets in place during installation. I've also tried Permatex Aviation Gasket Maker to hold the gaskets in place, but once the manifold drops onto the heads the gasket is pushed down



I've considered using the standard intake gasket which is a metal valley pan gasket instead of re-ordering the 1240s. Will a metal gasket work with a iron head/aluminum intake combination?

Save yourself some time and money - pull the distributor to allow it to go down straight. I doesn't take 5 minutes to pop it out and re-install it, Just mark the positions carefully and drop it right back in. You will have to check and set ignition timing when you get the engine re-started anyways. BTW, forget the gasket sealers with those gaskets. The best use for the metal gaskets is other than in the engine. A large bead of silicone on each end of the valley is all you need. Allow it to cure for a half hour or so befor installing the intake. Lower the intake straight down so you do not disturb the bead and it is flattened as the intake is tightened. Make sure all metal surfaces are clean and dry before applying the silicone bead.
