It sucks, I'd have the car looked at.

Sounds like you need a tuneup. Getting Hot? When was the last time the thermostat was changed, coolant flushed out, how does the inside of radiator look, might have partial clogged passages in radiator.

Ok, I'm gonna get real technical here; you've blown a cyclinder. Someone told me how this happens; dammed if I can remember! But, one of your cylinders ate the rings or something; VERY common on this engine. That's why they went to the 3.4.
Schlep down to your local AutoZone and ask to use a compression tester. Hopefully it will be the screw-in type where you can check it yourself, if not, get a buddy to go with you who won't say "I told you not to buy one of these Japanese things!" Have your buddy hold the tester into the cylinder while you crank the engine (or vice versa) and disconnect the spark before doing so.
If for some reason they all check within 10% (110-130 PSI) consider yourself lucky; you have a different problem that probably doesn't require a $1200 engine tear-down...

Check ignition timing, ignition advance, and air flow intake hose from the meter to the manifold for cracks.
