six cd player issue

Hello all,

I have a Celica 1.8 vvt-i purchased in year 2000 and the cd-player has stopped working (error 2, it says).

I think it's just a lens cleaning issue, however I don't know how to safely clean it because of the lid stays open only for a few seconds, even if I was able to reach the lens from the cd opening.

The CD player is the one which is separate from the radio/cassette unit, and the radio/cassette unit has the detachable front panel. If needed I can provide the exact model number.

Now, what I'm asking here is:

1) has anybody any idea of "error 2" exact meaning? 2) has anybody any hint about lens cleaning on that cd player? 3) has anybody the possibility to tell me how exaclty remove that funny piece from my car? It seems to be securely screwed in an infinite number of places, I'm afraid I have I have to remove the whole plastic dashboard, can anyone confirm that?

Many thanks in advance, Leo

Sorry, I can't help you with the error 2 meaning, but a Toyota dealer or United Radio in New York can. United Radio is Toyota's authorized repair facility, and you may be able to save some money by dealing directly with them.

You mentioned what you bought the car but not the car's model year. Assuming that it is a model year 2000 Celica, here are some instructions for mounting an in-dash mounting bracket that also happen to get you to the radio:

Ray, thanks for taking the time to reply.

N.Y. is quite far from me, as I'm in Italy.

It should be the '99 model, I thought that saying "1.8 vvt-i" would be enough to identify the model.

Very useful page, many thanks.

Error 1 and 2 happen on my 6 CD changer on the Camry when the CD fails to eject or play. Don't think its a lens cleaning issue but you could get something like this for cleaning:

But if it won't play or eject, a CD cleaner wouldn't help. Sometimes disconnect the power to the changer and reconnect would reset the error message and you would be able to play again. I found this to be a temporary fix and eventually the 6 CD changer require repair or replacement. I think this $600 CD mechanical transport will crap out in about 4 years, so yours lasted pretty long. The good thing is you could replace it with a DVD player for not much more than $200 for the unit plus parts and labor.

I had one, the brush got consumed in a couple of seconds. I think it didn't clean the lens but some sharp edge within the unit.

My feeling is that it cannot read the data and therefore can't play. It seems to be a read error (coded as error 2).

I'm going and try that. Disconnecting the main battery should produce the same result, right? Or do you mean disconnecting the CD while keeping the power to the other unit?

Well I'm trying to identify the issue for sure before going at any service, in my experience they won't check the current unit but would go straight for its replacement. And I dont' want to pay so much money for the replacement of something that can be repaired.

As said in another reply, I'm in Italy, there is a different customer satisfaction concept here...

Kind regards, Leo

That is a pretty long distance to ship an audio system for repair! Toyota Europe should also have an authorized repair facility or vendor.

I think the 1.8 VVT-i came to the U.S. in 1997, so it didn't help narrow down the model year for me.

You are welcome, and good luck with the repair!

Thank you for your contribution, actually I'm pretty sure that no cd is stuck into the unit. I can feed and eject any discs I try, but no one is read.

I have no idea what "error 2" means, but I can relate my experience with my

6 cd changer in a 2003 Avalon. I found that the discs could not be inserted nor ejected, and wouldn't play. With much trepidation, I removed the cd/radio unit from the instrument panel and popped off the top. On the playing table were not one but TWO cds, jammed together. I carefully removed them, and fed in one, which played fine (whew!) so I put the unit back in the dash and it has worked fine (including loading in and playing additional discs) ever since. You might give it a try before proceeding further. Hope this helps!

Yeah, that would be a different situation. Good Luck, Leo!

Disconnect the battery or remove the fuse to the cd player. Try the fuse to the cd player first. Disconnect the battery may also reset a few more things like the clock, may set off alarm, and computer may dump out some non critical stored info.
