sony cd problem

Recently bought an 04 mondeo TDCi which has a sony 6cd changer radio fitted (standard). It has no model number on it and did'nt come with a manual.

Problem I have is the CD doesn't seem to be working. Every time I put a CD in it displays the error 'check CD' and spits the disc out. I've tried commercial discs and ones I have burnt myself all with the same error. It has worked once or twice, but not since.

Anything I can do? Even help with the model number so I can look for faults on the web would be useful. Thanks.

It'll be a CD132-CD6 or a CDX-FC132

CD drives dying seem to be a common problem on Ford head units. Take it to a specialist car audio/ICE shop for repair. Chances are it just wants the lense cleaning but they get beyond the limitations of a CD cleaner so you need to take them to bits.

Mmmm, are you sure they're Sony units though?

I know it's not helpful, but they're plentiful on ebay. You could just buy another one!

It could be that the lens is dirty, but because of the hairy "thing" behind the slot, and the fact it's not recognising discs, you probably couldn't clean it that way.

You could try removing it, taking the box apart, and cleaning the pickup lens with IPA and a cotton bud, and putting it back together.

It's a facelift modem 6 CD changer. It'll be a Sony. Zetec & above have Sony head units. Zetec is an MP3 model, Ghia is 6 disc changer.

The BFO "SONY!!!!!11`" with cold cathode/white LED behind it is a bit of a give-away :-)

In retrospect, I don't know if I'd prefer the MP3 or changer. I can get more on 1 MP3 CD than 6 standard CDs.

Thanks all. It looks like it's a Sony CD132-CD6. Thought it might be a dirty lens - I'll have a go at dismantling the unit first and cleaning the lens, and if that doesn't work I'll get a replacement. Thanks.
